Counseling: A Day in the Life

In this post, as a part of Counseling Awareness Month, we wanted to give you a snapshot into the daily life of one of our counselors as they travel the state and navigate each appointment to help meet the needs of each client they serve.

Below is an interview with Kelly Arant, a Nationally Certified, Associate Licensed Counselor on our team who serves the Athens, Hartselle, Huntsville, and Mt. Olive areas.

What does a typical day look like for you?

The bulk of my days consist of seeing clients; I see between 5-8 clients per day. The remainder of the day is spent doing notes, other administrative tasks like phones calls, and time for ongoing development like reading or watching a video/webinar on a counseling related topic.

Who do you see?

I see children, adolescents, adults, and couples.

Why did you decide to pursue counseling as a career?

Counseling is a second career I pursued later in life. I had a desire to do something that mattered in the lives of other people. I also feel like it was a calling the Lord placed on my life.

What are the challenges of your job?

My biggest challenge is shutting my brain off at the end of the day.

How is travel involved in your position?

I travel approximately four hours per week to the various locations where I counsel. Other travel occurs when I have been asked to speak to a church or other event. I’ve also traveled to various conferences.

What do you love about your job? What are the joys?

I love getting to be a witness to people getting better. I like to say, “The Lord does the healing, the client does the work, and I get to provide safe passage on the journey.” It is a joy to watch individuals and families finding freedom and healing.
