CONFERENCE TOPIC

Addressing Trauma with EMDR and Somatic Interventions

This training will include research on both the causes, symptoms, and impact of trauma throughout the lifespan. A Somatic approach centers on awareness and use of sensations. An EMDR approach incorporates cognitions, emotions, and sensations from a past, present, and future orientation. These approaches can expand the capacity of clients to build a solid therapeutic relationship and their willingness to explore traumatic life experiences. In this training, participants will experience and practice using interventions from each of these approaches that do not require further training.

OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Identify causes and symptoms of developmental trauma.

  2. Describe the impact of trauma on memory, physical health, and relationships.

  3. Explain causes of complex trauma from an EMDR or Somatic lens.

  4. Explore requirements of further training in EMDR or Somatic Experiencing.

  5. Apply 3 interventions modified from EMDR to a personal professional experience.

  6. Demonstrate the use of tracking sensations with interventions modified from Somatic Experiencing.
