CONFERENCE TOPIC

EMDR and Kids: Cross-Hemispheric Integration Can Be Fun!

Led by Paris Goodyear-Brown, this conference is geared for clinicians who have at least basic training or interest in EMDR. This workshop will cover practical ways to integrate play therapy and EMDR across the 8 phases.

TraumaPlay™, a flexibly sequential play therapy model, offers key components for trauma informed treatment that can easily be interwoven with EMDR.

Both treatment methods will be briefly reviewed and the bulk of the day will offer creative ways to integrate the two approaches. Clinicians will leave with practical new tools for providing BLS, introducing and enhancing resources, effectively utilizing children’s attachment figures in the work, and offering play-based platforms for reprocessing. Experiential exercises will enhance learning, as will case examples and video review.

OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. List the seven key components of the TraumaPlay™ Model.

  2. List three forms of bilateral stimulation that involve play therapy materials.

  3. List five play therapy grounding interventions that can be used in any of the eight phases of EMDR.

  4. Describe two play therapy interventions that can support targeting and sequencing of targets in EMDR work.

  5. Describe three roles of attachment figures that can be enhanced through the combination of play therapy and EMDR in trauma processing.

  6. Explain two ways of inviting and guiding play narratives that titrate the approach to traumatic material during assessment, desensitization, and reprocessing phases.

  7. Delineate four playful ways to track Subjective Units of Distress in EMDR work.
